How to search your files with citations

Cairn answers from your files and connected tools, with a citation on every sentence. This guide is the map of that behavior and the pages under it.

Cairn is a private on-device knowledge assistant. It indexes your files and the tools you connect, including Slack and Notion. Every sentence of an answer has a citation. Source age and confidence are shown. Conflicting sources are flagged. A knowledge health report covers duplicates and outdated docs. Actions wait for approval. You can summon it from wherever you are working.

That paragraph is the product. The links below are how you practice it. None of them include an accuracy percentage, because we do not have one we are willing to print.

Index, then test with a question you can check

The index only knows what you gave it. Ask something a single note answers, and open the citation. That is the whole evaluation. Retrieval-augmented generation is the general name for answering from retrieved passages. Citation grounding is the name for the sentence actually pointing at one.

Age, confidence, and conflicts

A citation of an old Slack thread is not the same as a citation of a Notion page edited this week. Confidence is a reason to slow down. A conflict flag means two sources disagree and the assistant should not pretend otherwise. We do not publish the confidence scale.

The corpus itself

Duplicates and outdated docs make citations point at the wrong twin. The knowledge health report lists them. It does not delete them. A verified answer is a label on an answer, not a grade for the report. Any action waits until you approve it. You can summon Cairn without leaving the app you are in. Summoning is not approval.

Questions

Does connecting Slack mean the assistant is no longer on-device?

Cairn answers on the Mac. Reaching Slack or Notion uses those products, because that is where the accounts are. We do not describe a Seven Hills cloud that stores the workspace.

What if I want company-wide search with an admin console?

That is not how Cairn is described. The Glean comparison says so directly and sends you to Glean's own docs for their model. It does not invent their price.
