Murmur
Dictate emails on a Mac
Put the cursor in the message, hold the hotkey, and speak. Add names to the dictionary. Proofread before you send.
Murmur types into whatever app has focus. For email, that means the cursor is in the body, or in the subject, on purpose. The speech model is local. Sending the mail is still the mail app.
The cluster guide is How to dictate on a Mac.
Steps
Click into the field that should receive the words
If focus is on the To field, the sentence will be typed there. Click the body first when you are dictating the body.
Hold the hotkey and speak in sentences
Speak punctuation if you want it in the text, the way you would if you were typing carefully. The model runs on the Mac.
Add the names that matter
People, products, and internal acronyms belong in the custom dictionary. A sign-off you always use can be a snippet so you do not re-dictate it.
Read the draft, then send with the mail app
Murmur does not send email. The history in Murmur is a record of dictation, not a sent folder. Fix a mishearing before you send.
Before you start
- A local model can still get a name wrong. The dictionary is how you fix the ones you will say again.
- Webmail in a browser is still an app that can take focus. Make sure the cursor is in the message and not in the browser's address bar.
Questions
Does the audio go to a Seven Hills server?
No. Murmur uses a local speech model. Once you send the email, the mail provider has the text, because you sent the email.
Can I dictate into Apple Mail and other clients?
Text is typed into the focused app. Any client that accepts typing can take the result.
