Murmur
Voice typing for writers
Dictate a first draft into the editor you already use. Teach Murmur the names. Edit after, with the cursor in the same document.
Writers already have an editor. Murmur does not replace it. You hold a hotkey, speak, and the text is typed into that editor, a notes app, or anywhere else that has focus.
The model is local, so a draft does not need to be transcribed on someone else's server to exist on the page. You still edit. Dictation is a first pass, including for fiction and for a memo.
Steps
Open the document and place the cursor
Murmur types at the insertion point. Start a new paragraph where you want the spoken text to begin.
Speak a passage, not the whole chapter in one hold
Shorter stretches are easier to repair. History and stats stay in Murmur if you want to look back at a session. This site does not describe which stats, and it does not quote sample numbers.
Put character names and coined words in the dictionary
A custom dictionary is how repeated proper nouns stop drifting. A snippet is how a repeated phrase, a location line, or a signature comes out whole.
Edit in the same app
You do not export from Murmur to get a draft. The draft is already in the document. Read it. A local model mishears, especially homophones and names you have not added.
Before you start
- Do not assume a snippet fires unless you have created it. The feature exists. The contents are yours.
- Privacy of the draft after you paste it into a cloud editor is the cloud editor's behavior, not the speech model's.
Questions
Do I have to write inside Murmur?
No. Murmur types into the focused app. Keep the manuscript where you already keep it.
Is there a published words-per-minute figure?
No. We do not print a speed or an accuracy rate. Proofread.
