How to free up disk space on a Mac
Read the menu bar, understand why Storage disagrees with it, then preview a clean. The steps live in the use cases this guide links.
Freeing space on a Mac is a sequence, not a button. You need a number you trust, a list of files you recognize, and a way to undo the removal. Disk Housekeeper is built around that sequence: a menu bar readout, Smart Clean, Auto-Sort, Autopilot, a preview, the Trash, a low-space alert, and a savings history.
This guide does not repeat every click. It points at the use cases and the terms. If you only do one thing, do Free up space on a MacBook and stop when the preview shows a path you do not understand.
Start with the number, not the category
The menu bar readout is free space. The Storage window's System Data category is a bucket. Purgeable space is capacity the system might reclaim later. An APFS snapshot can hold space that a cache clean will not touch, and Disk Housekeeper does not describe deleting snapshots.
If those words are fuzzy, read them before you delete anything. The disagreement between two screens is usually one of these terms, or files still sitting in the Trash.
Clean only what you can name
Smart Clean is for developer caches and node_modules. That is a different guide, linked below, because the failure mode is different: you can always re-download a cache, and you can also ruin an afternoon if you needed it offline.
For everything else in a messy folder, Auto-Sort takes plain-English rules and shows a preview. Autopilot watches one folder you choose. Neither one is a license to skip the list.
Check the result
After a clean, read the savings history and the menu bar again. If the readout barely moved, the Trash is still holding the files, or you are looking at purgeable space. A low-space alert is a nudge for next time. It does not run Autopilot for you.
Questions
Will this guide tell me a typical amount of space to expect?
No. Your disk is the measurement. The savings history in Disk Housekeeper is the record. This site does not print a sample total.
What about files that are not caches?
Preview them. If you do not know what a file is, leave it. Auto-Sort can file downloads. It should not be aimed at the only copy of something you need.
