How to dictate on a Mac

Dictation on the Mac with Murmur is a hotkey, a local model, and the cursor you already placed. This guide links the steps and the limits of the privacy claim.

Murmur is on-device dictation. Hold a hotkey, speak, and the text is typed into any app that has focus. The speech model is local. History and stats stay in the app. A custom dictionary and snippets cover the words and phrases you repeat.

The privacy sentence is narrow, and it should stay narrow. Transcription runs on the Mac. The app you dictate into can still send the text when you tell it to. Read What stays on your Mac when you dictate once, then use the pages below for the actual work.

The gesture

Focus decides the destination. Click the email body, the manuscript, or the field, then hold the hotkey. If you dictate into the wrong field, that is focus, not the model.

The model and the words it will not know

Local means the recognition runs on the machine. It does not mean every name is spelled correctly. Add those spellings to the dictionary. Put repeated paragraphs in snippets. We do not publish an accuracy rate.

Comparing other dictation apps

Wispr Flow and Superwhisper come up in the same search. Our comparison pages state Murmur's behavior and tell you what to verify in their current docs. They do not invent the other product's architecture or price.

Questions

Does this work in every Mac app?

Text is typed into the focused app. If that app accepts typing in the focused field, it can accept the dictation. The field still has to be the one you meant.

Is there a Windows version?

Murmur is described as a macOS 26 app. No other platform is listed.
